Taking Action: How to Start the Creative Cycle and Transform Your Mindset

rolfesmelissa

In my last post, we explored the powerful connection between creativity and a growth mindset, diving into how each one fuels the other to create a positive cycle of transformation. But here's the thing: knowledge alone won’t transform your life. You’ve got to take action!

The creative cycle we discussed isn’t just a concept—it’s something you can tap into every day to build resilience, unlock new possibilities, and live with more intention and joy. The great news is, getting started doesn’t require some grand gesture. Small steps, practiced consistently, are enough to kick-start this cycle and create lasting change in your life.

So, if you’re ready to experience the magic of this creative cycle, here’s how you can begin:

1. Embrace Small, Creative Activities

If you’re new to creative activities or feel like you’ve lost touch with your creative side, start small. You don’t need to take up painting or write a novel right away—just incorporate a little creativity into your daily routine. Here are some simple, accessible ways to begin:

  • Try a new hobby: Pick up something you’ve always been curious about—whether it's knitting, journaling, gardening, or cooking a new recipe.

  • Engage in problem-solving: Find a small challenge in your life (e.g., organizing a room, planning a trip, managing a budget) and approach it creatively. What new solutions can you think of that might make it easier or more enjoyable?

  • Creative exploration: Take a walk in a new area of your city or town, snap photos, or write about your observations. Being open to new experiences taps into your creative curiosity.

The goal here is to step outside your comfort zone and engage in activities that stimulate your mind and creativity. The more you practice, the easier it will be to overcome the initial resistance that often comes with trying new things. You’ll also notice that your ability to approach challenges with creativity and optimism improves.

I encourage you to visit Blogs 25-36 (Oct-Dec 2024) that have creative activities listed for 10 different benefits of creativity.  These lists will be a great starting point for adding a little creativity to your life.

2. Create a Daily Mindset Routine

Just as creativity needs to be nurtured, so does your mindset. To strengthen your growth mindset, it's essential to cultivate it daily. Here are some practical ways to do that:

  • Start with Goal Thoughts: Begin your day with goal thoughts.  Goal thoughts are thoughts that emphasize growth, learning, and possibility. For example, “I am open to new ideas and willing to grow through challenges,” or “I embrace failure as an opportunity to learn and improve.”  I call these goal thoughts, because you may not believe them just yet, but you know that these are the types of thoughts that will propel you to take the right actions to reach your potential.  These are thoughts to try on and work into your current belief system.

  • Practice gratitude: Reflect on the things you're grateful for, particularly when it comes to your personal growth. This simple practice shifts your focus to the positive and helps you recognize how far you've come, even in small ways.

  • Journal your progress: Each evening, jot down something you learned or a challenge you overcame. The act of reflecting on your growth reminds you that progress is always happening, even if it’s not always visible right away.

  • Reframe challenges: The next time you face a challenge, pause and ask yourself, “What can I learn from this? How can I grow through this situation?” Shifting your perspective from frustration to curiosity will immediately open up your creative problem-solving abilities.

3. Challenge Yourself with Creative Risks

Once you’ve gotten comfortable with small creative activities, it’s time to push your boundaries even further. Start to challenge yourself with creative risks—things that may seem a little intimidating but will help you grow. Remember, growth comes from pushing yourself outside your comfort zone.

  • Try something you’re afraid of: Always wanted to speak in public but fear doing so? Write a blog post but feel unsure of your writing abilities? Taking a creative risk like this will force you to stretch your mindset and creative muscles.

  • Experiment with failure: Actively seek opportunities where you might fail—whether it’s trying a new skill, offering feedback at work, or pursuing an idea you’ve had for a while. Failure, when viewed through a growth mindset, is simply feedback and a stepping stone on the path to success.

  • Collaborate with others: Partnering with someone on a creative project can help you think in new ways and inspire fresh ideas. Don’t be afraid to invite collaboration and share your unique perspective!

By challenging yourself with these creative risks, you’re teaching your mind that you are capable of handling the unknown and learning from it—both key elements of a growth mindset.

4. Develop Creative Routines that Reinforce Your Growth

To truly harness the power of the creative cycle, it’s essential to make creativity and mindset work a regular part of your life. It doesn’t have to take hours each day—just a few minutes every day or week can make all the difference. Here’s how to do it:

  • Morning Creativity: Dedicate 10-15 minutes in the morning to a creative activity before you dive into your daily tasks. Whether it’s free-writing, sketching, or brainstorming new ideas, starting your day with creativity can spark innovative thinking throughout your day.

  • Mindset Check-In: Midday, take a moment to check in with your mindset. Ask yourself: “Am I staying curious? Am I approaching today’s challenges with a growth mindset? What can I learn from today’s experiences?” This simple practice helps you reset and refocus on the possibilities ahead.

  • End-of-Day Reflection: Before bed, take a few minutes to reflect on what you accomplished creatively and mentally. Celebrate any small victories, and think about how you could approach things differently tomorrow.

By creating daily habits around both creativity and mindset, you ensure that you’re constantly reinforcing the cycle of growth. It becomes a feedback loop that will drive your success.

Small Steps Lead to Big Changes

The journey toward cultivating both creativity and a growth mindset doesn’t require giant leaps. It’s the small, consistent steps you take each day that will compound over time and lead to big changes. As you introduce creative activities and mindset work into your life, you’ll begin to see the powerful cycle take effect: creativity sparks growth, growth fuels creativity, and both open up new possibilities for your future.
